Same-day tooth extraction: how to get a tooth out today in Sheffield

Call in the morning, be examined, and go home without the tooth the same afternoon. This page explains how that works at Deepcar, what can get in the way, and how to prepare.

How same-day extraction works at Deepcar

We hold emergency slots every day from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, and you do not need to be registered. When you call, the receptionist asks a few questions about the tooth and your health and books you into the next slot, usually within hours. The visit starts with the £30 emergency examination including X-rays. If the tooth needs to come out and it is safe to do it there and then, we tell you the fee, you agree it in writing, and we go ahead in the same chair.

This page is about the logistics: how to get the tooth out today and what might mean waiting. For the clinical side, how we decide a tooth cannot be saved and what the extraction itself involves, read the emergency tooth extraction page.

What makes same-day removal possible, and what stops it

Most teeth can come out at the first visit. The tooth is examined, X-rayed and numbed, and there is enough time in the slot. A few situations mean we deliberately wait, and it is worth knowing them in advance so a delay does not come as a surprise.

A large, hot swelling.

Infected tissue is acidic and resists local anaesthetic, so an extraction can be painful and the infection can spread. We drain the swelling, sometimes prescribe antibiotics, and remove the tooth two to three days later when it will be comfortable.

A tooth that needs surgical removal.

If the X-ray shows a wisdom tooth wrapped around the nerve, a root that has curved into a hook, or a tooth broken off at gum level, we may book a longer surgical slot, occasionally with a CBCT scan first. Often that is still the same day or the next.

Certain medicines.

Blood thinners rarely stop us, but some, such as high-dose warfarin without a recent INR result, need a quick blood test first. Bisphosphonate or denosumab injections for osteoporosis or cancer change the plan, because they affect how jawbone heals.

Not enough time in the slot.

If your examination reveals a difficult tooth at 7.30pm, the honest option may be a temporary measure tonight and the extraction first thing tomorrow.

You would like sedation.

Sedation needs an empty stomach and an escort, so a sedated extraction is usually the following day.

Preparing for an appointment where the tooth might come out

Eat before you come

unless you are having sedation. You will not want to eat for a few hours afterwards, and local anaesthetic is better tolerated on a full stomach.

Bring a list of your medicines

, or the boxes. Blood thinners, diabetes medication, steroids and osteoporosis drugs all matter.

Take your usual painkillers

as directed on the packet before you arrive; it does not affect the anaesthetic and makes the afternoon easier.

Do not stop your blood thinner

on your own. Tell us what you take and we will plan around it.

Arrange a lift

if you are anxious, having sedation or live alone. After a local anaesthetic you can drive, but many people prefer not to.

Clear the rest of the day.

You will be fine to be up and about, but not to run, lift or work in a hot kitchen.

Same-day extraction fees

There is no premium for having the tooth out on the day rather than at a later appointment. 0% finance over 6 to 18 months, or longer terms up to 60 months at 10.9% APR representative, is available through Tabeo if the day turns into a bigger treatment plan. All fees are listed on the emergency fees page.

Going home the same day: what to do that evening

You leave with a gauze pad in place, written instructions and a spare pad. Keep biting on the gauze for 20 to 30 minutes, then take it out and leave the socket alone. For the rest of the evening: no rinsing, no spitting, no straws, no smoking, no alcohol, no hot drinks and no exercise. Eat something soft and lukewarm once the numbness has gone, on the other side. Take paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the packet before bed. Sleep with your head raised. Some pink saliva on the pillow is normal; a socket that keeps filling with blood needs another 30 minutes of firm pressure on a damp gauze or tea bag, and if that does not stop it, ring the emergency line, which Dr Ijaz answers personally overnight.

From the next morning, start warm salt-water rinses after meals and keep everything else gentle for a week. Pain that turns worse on day two or three rather than better is the sign of a dry socket; call and we will dress it the same day. Our guide to pain after an extraction covers what is normal and what is not.

Sedation for same-day extractions

If the thought of an extraction is worse than the toothache, we offer conscious sedation at £200 a session. A sedative is given through a small cannula in the back of the hand; you stay awake and able to respond, but relaxed and with little memory of the procedure afterwards. It needs planning: nothing to eat for a few hours beforehand, an adult to take you home and stay with you, and no driving, work or important decisions for 24 hours. For that reason a sedated extraction is usually booked for the next day rather than done on the spot. Dr George is particularly used to treating nervous patients, with or without sedation, and you can read more on our sedation page.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Can I get a tooth pulled the same day in Sheffield?

Yes. Deepcar Dental Care holds emergency slots every day from 8am to 8pm, and most teeth that need removing are taken out at the first visit. No registration is needed.

How quickly can you see me?

Usually within a few hours of your call. We aim to treat the problem at the same visit. Early-morning calls give the most choice of times.

Is a same-day extraction more expensive?

No. The fee is the same £120 to £260 for a standard tooth whether it is removed today or next week.

Why might you not take the tooth out today?

The usual reasons are a large hot swelling that stops the anaesthetic working, a tooth that needs a longer surgical slot, a medication that needs a blood test first, or a request for sedation, which needs an empty stomach and an escort.

Should I eat before an extraction?

Yes, unless you are having sedation. A normal meal an hour or two before helps you tolerate the anaesthetic and means you are not hungry during the hours afterwards when eating is awkward.

Can I go back to work after a same-day extraction?

Desk work is fine the same afternoon if you feel up to it. Avoid heavy lifting, running or hot environments for 24 hours, as they raise blood pressure and can restart bleeding.

Do you take teeth out at weekends?

Yes. We are open 8am to 8pm on Saturdays and Sundays and most bank holidays. See our weekend and out-of-hours page.
